CPTPP goes into effect next week; ag groups concerned

The CPTPP– Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership– agreement goes into effect next week. And many U.S. ag groups are expressing concern about how it might affect trade with Japan, one of the United States’ largest ag export customers.

Steve Mercer with U.S. Wheat Associates says the agreement will allow Japanese buyers to pay significantly less for Canadian and Australian wheat.

“Eventually it will be 70 dollars a ton, or almost two dollars per bushel, less expensive for them to Canadian and Australian wheat, if nothing changes,” Mercer says.
